What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) from the United Nations are used to framework the exploration of global issues. Every student works through each of the 17 goals and responds in any way that they see fit. The are often moved to research through essay or report, but also they create art, poetry, songs, dances and slide shows, Minecraft scenes, games and so on.

How do we bring SDGs to Montessori Education?

Every two week the whole group starts a new SDG, with the results due on the Following Friday. The students can upload their work at any time, and get comments from staff, as well as reviews, inspiration, support, guidance and explanations.

The 17 SDGs are:

(1) No Poverty, (2) Zero Hunger, (3) Good Health and Well-being, (4) Quality Education, (5) Gender Equality, (6) Clean Water and Sanitation, (7) Affordable and Clean Energy, (8) Decent Work and Economic Growth, (9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, (10) Reduced Inequality, (11) Sustainable Cities and Communities, (12) Responsible Consumption and Production, (13) Climate Action, (14) Life Below Water, (15) Life On Land, (16) Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, (17) Partnerships for the Goals.

United Nations ASPNET School

As a UNITED NATIONS ASPNET school we consider the SDG core to curriculum. There are three core frameworks for the curriculum. SDG is one which changes every two weeks. The Personal Peace Project (PPP) lasts for a term and the Make a Difference (MAD) lasts for up to a year. This provides a balance of personal well-ness, community engagement and global responsibility. Peace Experiment offers this balance as the core curriculum. Students also study 3 other topics of their choice which rotate every 2 or 3 weeks. Students can continue with work that takes longer or change their focus after each 2 or 3 week session.

Students quickly realise the interconnectedness of these goals and build on earlier projects, as the year progresses.
