Our Board
Auckland Montessori College is guided by an advisory board. This board is selected from people in a range of fields to support our work. The board considers the past, present and future elements of our school and works toward enhancing and realising our vision. They have a range of specialist areas, and together hold the governance of Auckland Montessori College. The Board meets regularly to engage in conversations in futures thinking to ensure that our vision is reflective, reflexive and revolutionary. The Board is Kahui Ako Montessori Auckland, KAMA. The board can be contacted through board@amc.school.nz. AMC is owned by a private trust, and is a not-for -profit business registered in New Zealand. Please contact the principal if you would like more information.

Steven Arnold
I have been engaged in governance across 3 decades (!) From my involvement at school in school councils, leading to being award the Citizenship Award, to representations on University student councils, Presidents of drama societies, and in my role as principal ex officio on school boards, as well as serving on Albany Senior High School Board, and Berhampore school board as Chair.
I am a lecturer on an online masters programme in Montessori where we practice the use of dialogue. This is a technique developed by David Bohm, which follows a pathway of listening and trying to understand rather than 'making points' or 'convincing people'. It is with this collaboration in mind that I support the AMC board.
As a board, we recognise the world as a changing place and we are keen to consider ways to respond, and be proactive in the education space.

I look forward to engaging in meaningful discussions that will shape the future direction of AMC, contributing to strategic planning, and supporting initiatives that align with AMC’s educational values and goals. I also hope to learn as much as possible; from the journey of being part of this expansion board, from other members, any material and those I come into contact with as a part of this role. I expect this role to be hard work, with a lot of trial and error, but ultimately fulfilling.
My professional journey has been driven by a profound love of learning and a commitment to nurturing curiosity. I offer a proven track record in fostering strong stakeholder relationships, navigating complex discussions, and driving collaborative projects. My experience with strategic planning, background (and continued interest) in international business environments, governance best practice and community engagement will be valuable in advancing AMC’s objectives. In addition, I bring curiosity, youthful enthusiasm, dedication and a commitment to doing things to the best of my ability; and the grace to know I do not know everything.

My expectations for this position are centered around collaboration and strategic planning. I am eager to work with fellow Board members to ensure that Montessori continues to excel in providing high-quality education. I am particularly interested in supporting projects that align with our shared mission and vision.

I have a rich background in education, information technology, project management, and business after nearly 70 years of work experience. Much of my work has had a development focus, whether for new products and services, or in organisations, creating teams and systems.
All of my expertise is available to support the work of the board, including governance, development, and operational projects.
I enjoy working with people the most, especially to encourage team-based achievement, and am keen to continue this.
I would expect to contribute to the governance of the school(s), their projects and programmes with a constant eye on the outcomes being achieved by the student body and the organisation as a whole.

Helen Macdonald
My experience spans primary, intermediate, and secondary levels, with a focus on supporting students with diverse needs. I have also worked extensively in governance roles, including serving as Vice Chairperson of the Northern Auckland Kindergarten Association, Chairperson of HIPPY South Kaipara, and a trustee at Tomarata School and Helensville Primary School.
These roles have provided me with a deep understanding of strategic planning, policy development, and financial oversight, all of which I believe will be invaluable in supporting AMC’s mission and goals.
I am particularly drawn to the board’s vision of expanding governance across multiple institutions and developing innovative programs that align with Montessori values. I am eager to offer my skills in governance, strategic leadership, and community engagement to help guide Auckland Montessori College through its next phase of development.
